Mai Kai is a Polynesian resteraunt/bar that's been around since 1956, but just recently reopened after a multi-million dollar rennovation, which has elevated the experience to something that is now truely over the top.
When you first arrive, you drive over a small bumpy bridge that is lined by large tiki torches on each side. The bridge deposits you in an area of lush tropical foliage as you enter a turnaround and aproach the valet parking (mandatory and $8 per vehicle). The whole experience of even just driving up to the place made me feel like I was entering Disney or something else equally fun.
An iconic view of the place from the outdoor garden area on the far side of the resteraunt from where you enter initially
A view of the outdoor bar which is where you first arrive after dropping off your car with the valet
Another view of the outdoor bar area
After entering from the outdoor bar area, immediately to your left is the indoor bar area which is where I enjoyed sitting for happy hour
A setup presumably for some live music at the far side of the indoor bar
If you walk past the turnoff to the indoor bar you'll find yourself in the main dinning room where they have nightly dinner shows with live performances (not part of happy hour) starting at 6:30
If you walk through the main dining hall and continue going straight, you'll find the entrance to the outdoor garden area with several multi-tiered waterfalls and small wooden bridges to enjoy
All drinks this extensive tiki bar menu are 50% off during happy hour!!! (https://maikai.com/menus/)
Witchcraft: A generically sweet drink that is allspice/cinnamon Heavy. (6.5/10)
Tahitian Breeze: A decent sweet fruity drink that wasn’t personally to my taste. The way the ice is shaped makes it hard to extract all of the drink from the cup. 6.5/10
Pinky Gonzalez: Each sip initially tastes like caramelized sugar, but then quickly transitions to a burned / bitter aftertaste (7/10)
Pina Colada: This is a very solid Pina Colada, sweet, fruity, and well balanced (8.5/10)
Mai Kai tropical punch (mocktail): I like sweet drinks, but even by my standards, this one was sickeningly sweet. It boasts being a tropical fruity mixture, but all I could taste was pure sugar, with the fruit being nothing but a slight distant aftertaste (2.5/10)💀
Deep sea diver: This drinks was predominantly sweet with a hint of cinnamon and several other spices. All of the components blended together nicely to create an enjoyable rich undertone to the drink (9/10)
K.O cooler: This drink can be described as a slightly above average Mai tai with a moderately strong rum float as the top layer (7/10)
Mutiny: This tried to be a hybrid of a tiki drink and an expresso martini, but ended up being the worst of both parts. The sweetness of the fruity flavors and the sharpness of the coffee clashed severely with each other resulting in a drink I didn’t get anywhere near finishing even while slowly sipping at it. After a single sip, none of my friends wanted anything to do with it. Their reaction after tasting it reminded me of when a dog sniffs something and immediately turns their nose away (1.5/10) 💀
Bora Bora: A very rum Heavy drink that unlike most of the other drinks on the menu this was only slightly sweet. If you want a spirit forward drink this one may be for you. (6.5/10)
Moonkist Coconut: While more pricey than some of the other drinks, this one was well wourth trying. It was rich, flavorful, and just the right amount of sweet to not overwhelm the other components. (8/10)
Hidden Pearl: This one had a sweet and fruity flavor that tasted very artificial compared to most of the other drinks. It was good but ultimately nothing very special (6.5/10)
Special Reserve Daiquiri: will update after ordering again
Blue-52: Was not blueberry Heavy as promised by the bartender (6/10)
